Reading Is Delicious!

I love reading to my children, especially when food plays a prominent role! In honor of the upcoming National Reading Month, I wanted to share 10 favorite foodie books for kids.  Happy reading!

Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens -- This tale of trickery and triumph unfolds during harvest season, as readers learn about what grows underground (potatoes, carrots, beets and more) and what flourishes above ground (like corn, lettuce, and tomatoes).

Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey -- There’s something so deliciously sweet about this classic children’s book of mothers and their young picking blueberries together along the coast. I love One Morning In Maine, also by McCloskey, for featuring two of my favorite foods: clams and ice cream!! (Preferably not eaten together.)

Apple by Nikki McClure -- I love the simplicity of this book that features beautiful cut-paper illustrations, depicting the lifecycle – and beyond – of an apple.

Big Moon Tortilla by Joy Crowley -- Set in the Southwest desert under a delicious full moon, this book reminds us to consider our problems from all different perspectives.

Yoko by Rosemary Wells -- Every young reader can relate to Yoko when she is teased for being different. This lovely book helps younger children gain respect for cuisines and cultures that are different than their own.

Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman -- A funny rhyme about exceptionally picky eaters makes this book a joy to read aloud. And my kids always want to gobble up “Mrs. Peters’ Birthday Cake!”

Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal -- This pea can only have his dessert (spinach) once he finishes his dreaded dinner (candy)!

I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato by Lauren Child -- Sam and Lola learn that sometimes a creative name and a curious mind is all you need to discover a new favorite food.

Cook a Doodle Doo by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel -- Is there anything funnier than farmyard animals trying to “beat” their cake batter with a bat? Or picking petunias for “flour”?

The Rootlets’ Super Rootabilities by Vicki Marquez -- Join these super kids – Brocc, Carrotina, Cornelius, and Kaley – as they save the day! Young readers will have a newfound respect for their favorite veggies!
