Holiday Cheer: Snack Packs and Food Pantry Eats

Snack Packs
There are many ways to teach kids about helping others. This Thanksgiving our family made snack packs to keep in the car and share when we see someone in need. Snack packs are a perfect activity for young kids because they are easy and fun to make assembly-line style. Plus, we all know how much kids love snacks -- my kids were literally bursting with excitement filling these bags to share with others.

Supplies Needed:

  • Gallon size storage bags
  • Non-perishable snacks such as: nut packages, dried fruit, raisins, granola bars, fruit snacks, cookies, cereal bars, applesauce
  • Water
  • Other useful dry goods, such as toothbrushes and warm socks
  • A note of encouragement

Food Pantry
With a little research, you should be able to find many opportunities to feed families in your neighborhood. Volunteering your time, hosting a peanut butter and jelly drive, and donating food or supplies are all tangible ways to get kids involved. Want to donate canned goods? Find out what food pantries need most during the holidays, and year round. Choose items from this list of high-protein low-sugar foods to help people create healthy diets. (Think pasta, shelf-stable milk, oatmeal, and beans.)
