Spiced Cranberry Sauce
12 oz fresh cranberries
1 cup sugar
1 cup fresh orange juice
Zest from 1 orange
1 granny smith apple, peeled and diced
1. Place cranberries, sugar, juice, and zest in a small saucepan.
2. Bring to boil then add apple dices.
3. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes, until cranberries have popped and sauce has thickened.
Tips for making cranberry sauce with your Rad-Kids:
Let them explore the fresh cranberry before it's cooked. Examine the texture and color. If you are brave, take a bite. If you have dried cranberries at home, compare the tastes and texture.
Discuss what happens when the cranberries simmer with sugar and water. How does the texture and taste change? This is the same process used to make jam.
Let kids squeeze oranges to make juice. They can carefully zest the orange, too.
With a kid-friendly knife, kids can dice apples.
Kids can measure the ingredients.
Use leftover cranberry sauce as a dip for meatballs, or turkey sandwiches, or melted with cheddar cheese for quesadillas.
